Inspiration Coming To Fruition

I spent a lot of time last night pondering where I should take my next road trip and of all places Nicaragua kept entering my mind.  I am not one of those people who can just ignore a repetitive thought, so I started to do some research and surprise, surprise the country seems like the perfect place to get my driving on!

I looked at flights on my new favorite discount airline website Cheapoair and found some in the $200-range.  Score!  The reason why Nicaragua even entered my mind in the first place was because I had read in one of my various travel magazines about a new resort called Piedras y Olas, which was built in the little sea-side village San Juan del Sur.  There you can stay in casitas, or little houses right on the water for next to nothing.  Sounds like paradise to me!

My plan is to leave on a Thursday morning.  I will arrive in Managua, the capitol, in the late afternoon and then pick up my car and drive to Granada, where I will spend the night and the whole next day exploring.  Granada is filled with cobblestone streets, ancient cathedrals, and natural wonders like Lake Nicaragua and Volcano Mombacho.  I think it is going to be such a gem!  Saturday morning I will drive to San Juan del Sur and check myself, hopefully, into Piedras y Olas.  For the two days that I am there all I want to do is surf, scuba dive, and sunbake.  I have not decided yet if I will return home on Monday or Tuesday (I am definitely leaning towards Tuesday).  It really depends on how busy I am at my clinic.  I have a couple of travel mates that are interested in joining me, however if none of them end up coming along I am off on my own.

Of course plans will change as I start to book my flights and accommodations, but I am more than open to change.  Like I previously mentioned, detours are where the real adventures occur.  I know it will be such a thrill to drive in a country that I have never been to before--it certainly was in Costa Rica.  I had brushed up on my español for my South American trip a couple of months ago, though I should brush up on it again before this one too.  I cannot be driving around without knowing my transportation terminology.

Has anyone reading this entry been to Nicaragua before?  I would appreciate any travel advice you can offer.
