Congress Eyes Lifting The Travel Ban On Cuba

Next week, 18 Senators will introduce a bill that would permit all Americans to travel to Cuba.  The Washington Post reports that most likely "a bipartisan majority in Congress" would support the lifting of the current travel restrictions.  Having "illegally" traveled to Cuba myself about 2 years ago, I feel like I have a strong opinion on this matter.

My favorite photo taken on my trip in La Habana, Cuba.

As an American, it is impossible to speak about Cuba, let alone to make the choice to travel there, with all the red tape and implied illegalities, and say that it is not political.  I am completely against the current embargo that the U.S. has with Cuba and while I know my traveling there had no impact on it in any way, it was my one little way of rebelling.  (I think Che Guevara would have been very proud of me!)

The U.S. blockade against travel to Cuba only harms the innocent Cuban natives who are already suffering from the regime that controls their country.  The time has long since come that we should "tear down that wall" which was mistakenly imposed.  It is NOT our right to tell another country how to rule.  However, the change should be done methodically, as an immediate ending of the embargo would cause chaos.

And I am disgusted when I hear people say that Americans will pollute Cuba with their ugly ways if they are allowed to travel there.  Traveling is about the exchange of cultures (the good and the bad parts).  Cubans are intelligent enough to filter out what they like and dislike.  I am a proud American and I could not be more respective of other cultures when I travel.

I will definitely be returning to Cuba no matter if the travel restrictions are lifted.  The richness of the culture is intoxicating and yo quiero mas!
