Mi Loca Aventura de Nicaragua el Día 5 (Part 1)

I took my 1st surfing lesson about 2 years ago in Jaco, Costa Rica.  On my 1st attempt to catch a break, I was successful, and after that I was hooked.  Since then I have surfed in Australia, Hawaii, New York, North Carolina, and now Nicaragua!  I often fantasize about running away to some place with a good surf beach to live out the rest of my days.

I had heard from some surfer friends that Nicaragua was an awesome place to surf.  Adrienne had never surfed before and sadly it had been a while since I was on a board myself, so I asked the hotel to find us an instructor for the day.  I thought it would be good for Adrienne to learn the basics from a pro and for me to have someone to analyze my form.

Our instructor, Duane, was an American expat, who basically did exactly what I am always daydreaming about; he gave up his life in the States simply to surf.  He was really patient and encouraging and gave us 100% of his attention, unlike my instructor in Costa Rica who barely spoke any English and was more concerned with making-out with his girlfriend than teaching me how to surf.

The beach he took us too was about 30 minutes away from our resort.  We had to drive through some pretty rough terrain to get to it, thus it felt like a secret spot!  It was not the most beautiful beach I have ever been to by any means, but we had it completely to ourselves and the breaks were excellent.

Duane first began by teaching Adrienne, who caughton right away, as she is a snow boarder.  I was so proud of her!

After about 10 minutes of instruction wejumped right into the water.  We both used long boards, which is what I was used to.  I think it was a bit overpowering for Adrienne, since she's only 5'3," but for her petite frame she certainly has a lot of strength.  I, on the other hand, prefer the comfort of a long board, as I am 5'9."

We surfed about 2 hours, which went by waaay to quickly.  I could have easily stayed in the water for another 2 hours, however 2 things caused me not to.  1) I got slammed in the lip and teeth by my board and was in some pain and 2) a storm was headed our way.

We had no idea how we would spend the rest of our last day in San Juan del Sur, but we were excited to see where life would take us.

To be continued...
